The Riga International Biennale of Contemporary Art is a new, large-scale project founded in 2016. As an artistic event, it is defined by its combination of a European focus with a strong regional profile. Using the rich history of Riga and the Baltic region as an underlying framework and highlighting the area’s unique geographic position as a whole, the Biennale studies the artistic practices of the entire region and gives artists the ability to enter into a dialogue with the cultural, historical, and sociopolitcal context of the city and its geographic surroundings.

The 1st Riga Biennale will look closely both at humanity’s present and what it stands to face in the near future as we approach the second quarter of the 21st century.
The 1st Riga Biennial aims to paint a political, personal and existential portrait of the unprecedented times we live in and to relate the tectonic shifts that are taking place in the public as well as private realm today.
